Calum Stevenson

Calum Stevenson is a Scottish painter attending Glasgow School of Art studying for a Masters Degree in Painting. Calum graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 2019. His work is primarily inspired by his surroundings and experiences growing up in and around the area of Cumbernauld. Artist’s statement “Being in Cumbernauld throughout my life I have admired the grim beauty of brutalist architecture. When I was a child, I became unwell on a family holiday that left me hooked up to an IV line in a foreign hospital. It is since that experience that I have been fascinated by my fear of medical practice that has become more of a phobic obsession. I combine my medical memories with childhood surroundings as I look back on the place that I have a strong yet unappreciated connection with. My works often result in an almost dream-like environment that plays on Cumbernauld’s original aim to be the city of the future.”
