Urpu Sellar is originally from Pori on the West Coast of Finland. She studied textiles in Stuttgart in the 1970s before moving to Dumfries and Galloway in 1980. She discovered ceramics by chance when unable to find tiles for her bathroom, she decided to have a go with clay herself. She says I draw inspiration from my Finnish roots and the nature around me here in my new homeland. Finnish design is world famous for clean lines and functionality, plain forms which are important to me. I have a great interest in language and its subtleties and find English a rich source for my work, especially puns and idioms where the word has more than one spelling but only one pronunciation.
