Weather, light and the geological foundations of Scotland’s landscape offer a material image around which ideas can come together. In the layering of rock strata is the physical record of time with ‘now’ at the topmost level. It is exposed to the vagaries of weather from above, tectonic movement from below and subject to our interventions at the interface.
From deep within the earth there is a feeling of energy pushing up, while ancient particles reach down to us from distant stars. In the seeming stillness of mountains and continents there is a flow. The apparent motionless of stone contains the movement of atoms.
Painting in waterborne media is also inherently about fluidity. A conversation which arises from both intention and spontaneity in the interaction of pigment, water and the light within the white paper.
