Biography

George Birrell is a unique literary voice in Scottish contemporary painting. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1971, he spent the last four and a half decades fine-tuning a style that is both lyrical and highly technical, contributing regularly to exhibitions at home and abroad.

Rooted in the landscape and buildings of East Scotland, his painting is strongly influenced by the Scottish Colourists and the black and white photography of Ansell Adams, demonstrating a pitch perfect understanding of hue, tone and design.
