Biography

Calum Stevenson is one of the most sought-after artists in figurative painting today. As winner of the SkyArts Portrait Artist of the Year 2021/22, his journey from recent graduate to internationally recognised artist was watched by millions. His lyrical rendition of violinist Nicola Benedetti, the former child prodigy and now estabished cultural celebrity, has secured Calum a reputation for technical brilliance and observational wizardry.

Looking at the strength of his work, it would be easy to forget that Calum Stevenson completed his Master at the Glasgow School of Art in 2020, graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design just a year earlier.

The confidence and probing imagination of his compositions belies the fact that this is an artist in the early stages of his career. Combining a digital creative process with dark pictorial playfulness, his work walks a taut line between the controlled and the feral, between what is factual and what is felt.

He works from a studio in Stirling, a short commute from his home in Bonnybridge. He is a member of the judging panel awarding this year's Scottish Portrait Awards, with the prize winners announced September 2022.
